London Marathon Supporting 2018

“I think supporting marathons is far harder than running them.” – Jim

A day in the sun in London with the Dacorum & Tring AC Roadrunners Marathon Support Crew (DTACRRMSC?) enjoying spectating during one of the world’s most famous races: the London Marathon. After an early start, we headed to mile 23 to cheer on over 40,000 athletes ranging from the elites of Mo Farah to people wearing all manner of ridiculous costumes.

The first competitors through were the wheelchair racers, closely followed by the parathletes and the elite women. The crowds were growing and the heat was increasing as every athlete was cheered and applauded for their effort. Elite men passed next before the mass start and then it seemed as if the whole of humanity passed by. The moving throng of runners (and later walkers) was relentless and quite a sight to behold. Not many looked fresh at mile 13, even less at 23.

So much time spent on feet, fighting for space, surviving the hottest London Marathon day on record… and that was just being a supporter! A fantastic day in the capital with the glorious purple people.

Some incredible performances out there, especially with the heat. Big shout out to Sophie Routledge who completed her first marathon but still has another two coming up in the next few weeks! She is raising money for SSAFA, a great cause, in memory of her cousin SAC Ryan Tomlin. If you can spare a few bob head over to her Virgin giving page.
